Indian Railways has approved Kavach Version 4.0 for 660 route kilometres in the Izzatnagar Division of North Eastern Railway at an estimated cost of Rs 295 crore, according to an August 12, 2026 Press Information Bureau release.

Why this matters

Kavach is the railway system's indigenous train-collision avoidance architecture, and the new approval folds the Izzatnagar work into a larger plan to equip balance sections with Kavach and its LTE-based communication backbone. In practical terms, that means another corridor moving from pilot-stage discussion to funded implementation.

The real benchmark now is rollout speed. Railway safety announcements are most meaningful when procurement, installation, staff training and interoperability all move in sequence rather than remaining isolated headline figures.
