A Press Information Bureau backgrounder published on Thursday, August 13, 2026 says the IndiaAI Mission has expanded shared compute capacity to more than 45,000 GPUs as of June 2026, giving startups, researchers and public-interest projects access to high-cost computing they could not easily build on their own.
The scale-up in numbers
The same backgrounder says 237 projects had used subsidised AI computing by August 2026, accounting for 93.18 lakh GPU hours. It also says AI Kosh was hosting more than 14,000 datasets and 331 AI models by July 2026, while government-linked initiatives had developed 62 prototypes and deployed 20 AI solutions in public institutions.
That matters because compute access, not only talent, is often the hardest barrier for small firms and research groups. If the capacity is dependable and affordable, it could widen who gets to build serious Indian-language, governance and industry AI tools.
