A 2005-batch IAS officer from Maharashtra, Mundhe hails from a humble agricultural background in Beed district. He cracked the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2004 with an All India Rank of 20 and formally joined the IAS in 2005. Soft-spoken in public but uncompromising in action, Mundhe built an early reputation as an officer who prioritises rules, public health, and accountability over political comfort.

FDA Commissioner & Mass Crackdown

Appointed as the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Maharashtra in May 2026, Mundhe immediately launched an aggressive statewide crackdown against food safety violations, unhygienic restaurant kitchens, and adulterated food stocks. Despite political and legal pushback, he has maintained a zero-tolerance stance on corruption and bribes.

The Analogue Paneer Ban & Inspections - Following lab tests showing over 35% of samples failed quality standards due to palm oil and vegetable fat adulteration, FDA Commissioner Mundhe imposed a one-year statewide ban on analogue (fake/non-dairy) paneer.

Mundhe shared that a personal restaurant outing with friends turned into an impromptu inspection after he suspected the paneer served at his table was artificial, further fueling strict enforcement.

Severe Penalties: Production, storage, distribution, and sale of artificial or non-dairy paneer are strictly banned across Maharashtra. Restaurants face severe penalties, stock seizures, or license suspensions for serving fake paneer.

Broader State Action: Several Indian states have undertaken similar drives against analogue paneer. While states like Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh acted against non-dairy substitutes, Maharashtra stood out with a comprehensive, long-term regulatory ban citing public health risks.

  • Public Praise to Public Backlash: While the public initially praised the officer, Wankhede and his family soon faced intense counter-scrutiny, media leaks, and digging into old administrative records.

  • Dropping Charges: The NCB eventually filed a chargesheet dropping all charges against Aryan Khan due to insufficient evidence and investigative flaws.

  • Inquiries & Charges: Inquiries into the handling of the case led to legal action, corruption charges, and an extortion probe targeting Wankhede.

  • Wankhede remains an active Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, currently serving as an Additional Commissioner in the Department of Revenue.

The Celebrity & System Mechanics

  • In the Wankhede case, one superstar's son was under scrutiny. In Mundhe's case, three top celebrities—Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Tiger Shroff—are under the scanner. When high-profile names face regulatory action, PR teams, legal machinery, and dedicated fan bases often collaborate to shift public optics and reshape narratives. Over time, media cycles fade, public outrage cools, and the subjects often receive clean chits or quiet resolutions.

  • High-stakes crackdowns frequently trigger pushback from powerful influence networks. Officers who step into the spotlight during major cases often find themselves targeted, transferred, or sidelined once the initial excitement passes.

Wankhede remarked: "Nothing extraordinary, he is just doing his job."

Ab Tukaram Mundhe ka kya hoga, samay hi batayega?  Only time will tell if this crackdown alters the system or simply follows the established administrative script.

Expert opinion

It looks like a similar case where when an officer comes into the limelight, big sharks then track the case with combined efforts and eventually the officer is found nowhere.
